Castle Craig

Castle Craig is a world-renowned residential rehab clinic which treats people suffering from alcohol and drug addictions, many of whom have other complex conditions, such as gambling and gaming addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, and eating disorders.Castle Craig is part of the Castle Health Group that includes Smarmore Castle in Ireland, Stockholms beroendeklinik, CATCH Recovery in London, and Castle Craig Nederlands.

History

Built in 1798, the mansion house of Castle Craig has retained many of its original features including magnificent fireplaces, marble pillars and exquisitely carved panelling. Since it was purchased by the McCanns in 1988, the house and other buildings have been fully renovated to fulfill all necessary requirements of a leading mental health hospital in the UK while preserving the original feel of the estate.

Private Location

There are 50 acres of woodland and gardens at Castle Craig with plenty of space for activities and therapies that have evolved over the years such as yoga, equine therapy, alpaca walks, nature walks, fitness activities and outdoor therapy.

We have run successful outcomes studies, the most recent in 2017 showed that XX% of patients who come into treatment remain abstinent for up to a year. We are inspected regularly by our governing body Healthcare Improvement Scotland - and here’s a nice story - our current Medical Director, Consultant Psychiatrist Professor Jonathan Chick, used to actually be an inspector for HIS, and he was so impressed by what he saw at Castle Craig that he applied for the role of Medical Director when it came up.

Treatment Approach

The Castle Craig vision of ‘recovery’ goes beyond helping patients when they are in treatment; they aim for long lasting results, and that is why their programme encompasses a range of therapeutic tools that really get to the root of the problem. Their abstinence based, evidence-based programme follows the 12-Step philosophy and incorporates one-to-one therapy, group therapy, complementary therapies such as equine therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, acupuncture and massage, a robust family programme and a continuing care programme with a range of options.
